Fred Vlastuin was born April 10, 1931, on a farm near Doon, IA, to John and Elizabeth (Van Grootheest) Vlastuin. He was the 4th of 7 children. Fred attended a one room country school, graduating from the 8th grade. He worked at home as a farm hand and for other farmers. On June 20, 1951, he married Ann Vander Boon. Soon after he entered the US Army and served his country until August 8, 1953. Fred served most of his time in Korea. After returning home, they bought a feed grinding business in Alvord, IA.
